Govinda Hela – The Westminster Abbey

This natural rock fortress, almost similar to the Sigiriya Rock, said to be sheltered to a Duke called Buvanekabahu, who escaped from the Polonnaruwa Kindom. Polonnaruwa Kindom was collapsed in 1225 AD. as a result of the South – Indian invasions occurred continuously. Consequently, rulers of polonnaruwa shifted towards the North-Western region of the island seeking protection. But, some of the higher rankers withdrew towards other areas which they could find protection as they wish. Thus Buvenekebahu decided to choose this rock fortress for his protection and established his citadel on the summit of the rock and administrated the Southern region for twenty five years. A substantial area of the summit is covered with the ruins and the moonstone laid is distinctive among the others.
This rock named by the British Rules as The Westminster Abbey considering the external appearance of the rock. The rock is located near the 16th km post and the Buvanekabahu temple, on Siyambalanduwa – Ampara Road.

Gal Oya National Park lies south-east of the country in the eastern and uva provinces. This park was established to protect the catchments area of the Senanayake Samudraya (lake). This reservoir was created by damming the Gal Oya River at Inginiyagala, from which the name of the park is derived. This reservoir covers 78 sq. kilometers in extent and was named after the first prime minister of the country after independence and the instigator of this project.

In addition to the national park, three sanctuaries were declared to protect the catchment area of this tank.
